A few days ago, I shared the hands-on experience I had of the Coolpad Dazen 1. Note that this smartphone was launched in May earlier this year. In this post, I am going to share the detailed review of this device by a Chinese OEM.
The box contains the handset, a travel adapter, a USB cable for charging and data syncing, a user guide, and a warranty card. There are no earphones in the box. (I do not understand why OEMs opt not to go for a pair of earpiece. Is it a Chinese custom or anything? Remember that Xiaomi Mi 4 (review), Xiaomi Redmi Note (review) and Phicomm Passion 660 (review) were also deprived of earphones. Looks like they are following the footsteps of their competitors.)
The rear of the device is made up of plastic with a matte finish, and this extends to all the sides as well. It is prone to fingerprint smudges. The curved edges make the grip firm. The screen possesses thick bezels.
The smartphone has a removable back cover. By removing it, one can gain access to the two micro SIM card slots and a micro SD card slot. It is to be noted that only one of those slots supports 4G. Also, the labels marking the SIM slots are interchanged, i.e., the slot labelled "SIM 1" is actually for the second SIM, and vice-versa.
As far as the design of the device is concerned, no innovation has been put in. It resembles other competitor devices, but is quite decent to look at. At the same time, it feels solid in hand.
In terms of specifications, the device features an IPS display with a resolution of 1280x720 pixels. It is powered by 1.2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon quad-core processor, 2 GB RAM, 8 GB internal flash memory (expandable up to 32 GB via micro SD). It comes with a 5-inch screen. It runs on Android 4.4 with Coolpad's skin, the CoolUI, and packs 2,500 mAh battery. It also features a 8 MP primary camera, along with a 5 MP front-camera which is good at taking selfies/groupfies.
The smartphone possesses acceleration, light and proximity sensors. It does not have direction, gravity, e-compass, gyro, temperature, pressure, ambient temperature, relative humidity, linear acceleration and rotation vector sensors.
The device runs on Android KitKat, with its own custom skin as a topping. It is called the CoolUI. I personally liked the interface. There are a few bugs though. For instance, when the battery is less than or equal to 15%, there is a popup message which says "Battery surplus 15%". The language translation team must take note of this. Also, while closing all the running apps, the remaining RAM sometimes shows "2.1 GB free of 2.0 GB". How's that possible?
There is no app drawer, and all the apps are placed on the home screen itself. There are quite a few interesting pre-loaded apps on the device. These include Lock screen, CoolShow, Rock Wallpaper, and Cool Store, to name a few.
As the name specifies, Lock Screen locks the device's screen whenever the app icon is touched.
CoolShow is a one-stop app to manage device's theme, lock screen and home screen wallpaper, alarm tones, lock screen style, and more.
Rock Wallpaper changes the device's home screen wallpaper on a single touch. There is a collection of images, after which they start repeating. Also, if the device is shaked, the existing wallpaper gets some visual effects. I liked this feature a lot.
The smartphone also comes with a split screen option, i.e., two apps can be used at the same time by splitting the screen horizontally into two. For instance, one can easily watch a video on Youtube while chatting on Whatsapp.
Gaming on this device is a joyful experience, many thanks to its 1.2 GHz quad-core processor backed by 2 GB RAM. Multi-tasking on this device is fun and quick. No lag was observed while launching and switching between apps, clicking or editing photos, watching videos or browsing the internet. The phone doesn't heat much, even after a longer usage.
AnTuTu rating: 20207
General performance: High (surpasses 60% other devices)
Game performance: Poor (surpasses 40% other devices)
Battery performance: Average (surpasses 50% other devices)
The device supports 5 finger multi-touch, i.e., the touchscreen can detect (and act at) five touches at any instance in time. This is different than other devices, which support 10 finger multi-touch!
The device features an IPS display with a resolution of 1280x720 pixels. It comes with a 5-inch screen. The display is ideal for single-hand usage. The viewing angles are decently wide, making it easy to view at any angle. The glass is non-reflective, hence no issues to use the device in direct sunlight. The display is rich. The touch sensitivity is good. But it is prone to dust and fingerprint smudges.
The smartphone features a 8 MP rear camera, along with a 5 MP front-camera which is good enough for taking selfies/groupfies. It has most of the common features, including various filters and modes. Auto as well as manual focus is quick. Low light photography is not recommended, due to the poor color reproduction, as colors appear to be dull when compared to original. There is also a Pro mode, which allows the user to tweak white balance, ISO and exposure compensation. Overall, the camera performance is satisfactory.
Find below a few sample images clicked using this device's camera:
The device packs 2,500 mAh battery, which lasts long enough. Even the charging time is more, the discharging time is equally greater. All-in-all, the battery backup given by this device is appreciable.
1. Impressive display
2. Satisfactory camera performance
3. Appreciable battery backup
1. Runs on an older version of Android
The display is rich,
The interface has a few glitch.
And given the economical price,
The device is a snitch.
