Update: Apple has updated the price of iPhone SE for the Indian market. It will now cost ₹39,000 for the 16 GB variant. This is a first of its kind price update we are witnessing from the manufacturer. This also means that our poll (at the end of the post) is now outdated.
The much awaited Apple event of the year has concluded. And as expected, the Cupertino giant has announced a smaller (4-inch) iPhone. They are calling it the iPhone SE (wonder what SE stands for!). The screen size reminds us of Apple's past, the time when they used to make 4-inch smartphones. The time of Jobs. The idea is to lure more people into the iOS ecosystem.
Coming to the newly launched smartphone, one thing that is sure is that it definitely packs a punch. It is powered by the 64-bit A9 chip, along with the M9 motion co-processor. The primary camera is a 12 MP iSight sensor that is capable of recording 4K videos. This was the same in iPhone 6S. The device supports panorama clicks up to 63 MPs. The iPhone SE comes with a new image signal processor, and a true tone flash. The secondary camera is a 1.2 MP shooter.
As expected, the Home button comes with the built-in fingerprint sensor, commonly known as the Touch ID. The device comes with the "Hey Siri" always-on feature. (Remember the "OK Google" thingy on Nexus devices? Yeah it's the same!).
As far as the design of the SE is concerned, you can pick your 5S and get it done with. There are no surprises here.
Nothing about the battery capacity has been mentioned in the presentation. We just hope it will perform as an iPhone's battery does. In fact better, the display is way smaller right?
On the connectivity front, the device has a modem with LTE speeds up to 150 MBps. In case you aren't aware, this is 50% faster than what iPhone 5S has! Then there is VoLTE support as well, so happy face-timing.
Apple Pay, Live Photos, you name it, they have it. But yeah, no 3D touch! It will run on iOS 9.3, which is now available. The device will come in four color options, viz. silver, gold, space grey and rose gold.
As far as the pricing is concerned, one needs only $399 in the US for the 16 GB variant, and $499 for the 64 GB variant. If you are in India, you'll have to shell out ₹30,000 to own this device (16 GB model). Pre-orders in the US start from 24th of this month.
