When it comes to innovating displays, LG is the name that comes to mind. During Consumer Electronics Show held in 2014, they came up with the world's first flexible OLED TV screens, whose angle of curvature could be controlled via a remote. As intriguing as that sounds, it was a miss amongst the consumers. This year, LG is back at the CES, with yet another innovative display: a rollable OLED screen that can be moved or hidden when not in use.

Sony had tried such a thing in 2010. Even LG had showcased an 18-inch prototype rollable display at CES last year. But this is the biggest (65-inch) this world has seen. It comes with 4K support. It can be rolled up like a poster into a box, thus making it easily portable.

If 65-inch is too big for you, or if you intend to use it for purposes other than watching TV, the screen can be partially unrolled to form smaller displays. It can then be used as a calendar or a music player. Moreover, it can be resized to different aspect ratios.

There are no details regarding the availability or pricing. It seems one has to wait to roll up their TVs and go for a walk in the park.

LG's latest flagship of the famous G series, the LG G6, was recently launched at the Mobile World Congress. LG V20, another flagship phablet from the brand, was also announced recently. How do the two devices from the same manufacturer stand against each other? We try to find out.

Battery capacity

LG G6 boasts of a 3,300 mAh battery, while the LG V20 has a 3,200 mAh battery. Thus, the G6 has around 3% larger battery capacity.

Battery type

G6 comes with a non-removable battery, while the LG V20's battery can be removed.

Color options

G6 offers black, platinum, and white variants, while the V20 comes in gray, pink and silver.

Design

G6 boasts of an aluminum frame along with glass panels at the front and rear, while the V20 comes with an aluminum unibody design.

Dimensions

LG G6 is 148.9 mm in height, 71.9 mm in width and 7.9 mm in depth. LG V20 is 159.5 mm in height, 78 mm in width and 7.6 mm in depth. Thus, V20 is around 7% taller and 9% wider, while the G6 is 4% thicker in comparison.

Display aspect ratio

LG G6 comes with an unusual aspect ratio of 18:9, while the LG V20 features the usual 16:9 aspect ratio.

Display pixel density

G6 boasts of a pixel density of 565 ppi, while V20 has only 513 ppi. Thus, G6 has 10% higher pixel density.

Display resolution

G6's screen has a resolution of 2880x1440 pixels. V20 features a QHD display, with a resolution of 2560x1440 pixels.

Dual screen

G6 has only one screen, while the V20 features a second smaller screen above the main display to house shortcuts and notifications without interrupting the primary display.

Internal storage

G6 offers 32 GB memory, while V20 has doubled the built-in storage.

Price

LG G6's pricing is yet to be revealed. LG V20 is available at an average price of approximately $682.

LG G6 comes with a 13 MP standard lens, along with 13 MP wide-angle lens. The LG V20 boasts of a 16 MP standard lens along with a 8 MP wide-angle lens.

Processor

G6 runs on the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 quad-core chipset clocked at 2.35 GHz. V20 runs on Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 quad-core processor clocked at 2.15 GHz.

Water resistance

G6 comes with IP68 certification, while the V20 does not have any such feature.

Weight

LG G6 weighs 163 g, while the V20 weighs 174 g. Thus, LG V20 is almost 7% heavier.

Wireless charging

LG G6 models available in the US support wireless charging, but the V20 has no such feature.

Verdict

Since the LG G6 is not yet available, it is tough to declare a winner by just the specifications. However, if you are an audiophile who prefers phablets, there is no point waiting for the G6, and LG V20 is the choice you must make. Otherwise, it is worth waiting for the price at which the LG G6 will be offered. One downgrade in the G series from the Korean giant is their moving away from the modular approach applied in LG G5.

After a series of leaks and rumors, LG has finally lifted the curtains from its latest flagship device, the LG G6, at the Mobile World Congress 2017.

The device comes with a 5.7-inch IPS always-on FullVision display with a resolution of 2880x1440 pixels, and a pixel density of 565 ppi. It has an almost bezel-less design, with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protecting the screen.

LG G6 is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 quad-core processor (two of them clocked at 2.35 GHz, while the rest at 1.6 GHz). It is coupled with Adreno 530 GPU. It comes with 4 GB RAM and 32 GB internal storage. The memory is expandable up to 2 TB via microSD card slot.

The rear camera is a dual lens setup (13 MP each) - f/1.8 and f/2.4 combo with dual LED flash. It is paired with a 12 MP front-facing f/2.2 lens. The fingerprint sensor is placed at the rear. The device is dust and water resistant (IP68 certified).

The smartphone is packed with 3,300 mAh battery. It supports QuickCharge 3.0. The device runs on UX 6.0 operating system, based on Android Nougat.

Yes, you read it right. Thanks to LG, this may soon become a reality. LG Innotek, a subsidiary of LG, has successfully developed such a design wherein the fingerprint sensor is placed below the display.

The way fingerprint modules are placed in current smartphones, they are prone to scratches as the users are required to make physical contact with them to authenticate. With the new design, this problem can be easily solved. The display already has a protective covering (like Gorilla or Dragontrail glass), and the fingerprint sensor can sit under it unharmed. Also, the OEM’s need not worry about the fingerprint module when making IP67 certified (waterproof) devices.

To house the sensor, a 0.3 mm thick cut is made on the lower backside of the glass. The sensor is then attached to the display with the help of an adhesive.

If we talk about accuracy, this design is comparably accurate to the ones available today. The probability that an unauthorized person will gain access to the device (via the fingerprint sensor, of course) is as low as 0.002%.

Effectively, all this means that we will be able to unlock the device by just placing our fingers on the display. Even though this sounds interesting, it is just the beginning. However, the future looks promising. We’ll have to wait and see how the events unfold.

As far as their commercial availability is concerned, there is no news yet. But given the increasing demand of a fingerprint sensor in portable gadgets and the rise of digital payments, the day is not too far.

LG has today announced the launch of their latest flagship smartphone, the LG G5, at the Play event held at Barcelona during the Mobile World Congress 2016. It features a semi-modular design, and has announced two modules about which we'll be talking later in this article.

The device comes with a metal body. The volume rocker key has been moved to the side, and is no more placed at the rear.

G5 comes with a 5.3-inch Quad HD display with a resolution of 2560x1440 pixels and density of 554 pixels-per-inch. The device comes with an Always-On display, which effectively means that only a part of the screen is always turned on. And if you are concerned about the battery as we are, you would like to know that only 0.8% of the battery is discharged per hour as a result of this feature. If you remember the secondary display on the LG V10, this is exactly the same thing but on the primary screen itself. It will be used to display date, time, battery status and other important notifications.

The device sports a dual camera setup at the rear, a 16 MP 78-degree lens and a 8 MP 135-degree wide angle lens. The LED flash is located in between the two lenses. The front camera is an 8 MP sensor with autofocus. The fingerprint sensor is placed at the rear below the camera, and the power button is built in the fingerprint module.

The device is backed by only 2,800 mAh battery, which seems less given the QHD display along with the always-on feature. The device comes with Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 feature. Also, the battery is removable.

The smartphone is armed with Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset, 4 GB RAM and 32 GB internal memory (expandable via micro SD slot). G5 comes with Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

As mentioned earlier, LG has already unvieled two additional modules for the G5, the CAM Plus and the Hi-Fi Plus with B&O Play.

The CAM Plus can be attached via the battery slot. It provides hardware buttons for power, shutter, record and flash, and a dial for zoom in/out. The idea is to provide the ergonomics typically available in a DSLR. What's best is that this module also provides an additional battery of capacity 1,200 mAh.

The Hi-Fi Plus with B&O Play is especially made for the music fans. It not only acts as a module for the G5, but can also work as a standalone device.

The device features USB Type-C. It weighs just 159 g, and will be available in four color options, viz. Silver, Gold, Pink and Titan.

LG has announced their latest high-end smartphone under the V-series, the V10. There are two unique things about this device - a second display, and a dual front-facing camera. We'll talk in detail about this later in the article.

The device runs on 1.8 GHz hexa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor. It is coupled with Adreno 418 GPU, and possesses 4 GB LPDDR3 RAM.

It runs on Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, with LG's custom skin, the UX UI on top.

On the imaging front, the smartphone features 16 MP rear camera. It is accompanied with laser auto-focus, Optical Image Stabilization 2.0 and LED flash. The front camera is a dual 5 MP shooter. This is one of the USP's of the device. The secondary camera module features two separate lenses, making it capable to capture standard as well as wide-angle selfies. A software combines images taken from both the lenses to render the final wide-angle click.

The smartphone sports a 5.7-inch QHD Quantum display with a resolution of 2560x1440 pixels at 513 PPI. There is also a 2.1-inch IPS Quantum display which constitutes the second screen I mentioned about. When the display is off, this secondary screen displays weather, date, time and battery information. It can also be used as a desktop to hold shortcuts of your favorite apps for quick access. It can be set to always stay on if required, but this will definitely take a toll on the battery life. And if you are busy watching your favorite movie or chasing down cars in Asphalt, the second screen will display notifications without blocking your view!

The device has 64 GB internal storage, which can be expanded up to 2 TB. The battery capacity is 3,000 mAh. It supports Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0, which means that it takes only 40 minutes to charge up to half its capacity.

At the rear of the device is placed a fingerprint sensor, to provide one-touch access to the smartphone and various apps.

The manufacturer claims that the smartphone can withstand a fall of up to 1.2 meters.

The device will be available in Space Black, Luxe White, Modern Biege, Ocean Blue and Opal Blue color options. It will go on sale in Korea within a few days. United States, China and key countries in Asia, Latin America and the Middle East will follow. It is rumored to be priced around $680.
