Microsoft today announced the launch of its latest tablet in the Surface series, the Surface Pro 4. Remember that the previous model, the Surface Pro 3, was launched in May last year. At the same event, Lumia 550, Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL have also been announced.
The device runs on the latest Intel Skylake processors. Various models with up to 16 GB RAM and up to 1 TB storage will be available.
It runs on Microsoft Windows 10 (no points for guessing that). All the new features will be available out of the box.
The tablet, if you like calling it so, integrates the Windows Hello camera. The user needs to just look at the device, and it will log you in!
The device sports a 12.3-inch display, which is larger than that of its predecessor. It comes with 5 million pixels, at the rate of 267 pixels per inch. To improve the display, it comes with a new PixelSense technology. The screen is covered with 0.4 mm thick Gorilla Glass 4, and 1.1 mm backlight unit. The device, as a whole, is thinner, lighter and more powerful that its sibling.
It comes with a fingerprint sensor on the keyboard. Also, as expected, Cortana is integrated into the system.
As the comparison results suggest, the tablet is 30% faster than its predecessor, and 50% faster than Apple MacBook Air.
The device comes with a hybrid cooling system. The spacing between the keys is also improved.
It is 8.4 mm thick. The huge thickness is due to the presence of four USB 3.0 ports. It also has two 4K DisplayPort, and an Ethernet port.
Microsoft has also tried to provide an improved version of the Apple Pencil, which was introduced with the Apple iPad Pro. They call it the Surface Pen. It kind of mocks the Pencil, as it comes with an eraser on one end! It can be magnetically attached to the side of the tablet when not in use. It has a battery life of one year, and is not rechargeable. Also, it comes along with the tablet (you don't need to buy it separately)! Virtual assistant Cortana is integrated into the Pen, pressing the eraser end launches it.
The tablet is available for pre-orders starting tomorrow for a price of $899, and will start shipping October 26.
