Xiaomi today announced that Redmi 2 is now available for ₹5,999. Remember that this smartphone first went on sale in March 2015 in India. The smartphone is down ₹1,000 from the original launch price of ₹6,999. It can also be purchased for ₹3,999 by exchanging an old smartphone.

The reason for this price cut are the lower costs, that have enabled the manufacturer to reduce the price. They hope to sell more units with this new price, and stay in the competitive smartphone market of the country. Also, the upgraded version of this device is expected to launch soon. So, this can be considered a stock clearance sale as well.

It was Xiaomi's very first device to use a 64-bit processor. The smartphone received a warm welcome for its fast surfing, streaming and gaming speeds.

The device is available on Flipkart at the new price, and also the first to support dual SIM 4G. But before you plan to lighten your wallet for this device, do check out the first impressions I had of the device.
