[Review] Coolpad Dazen X7

A few days ago, I shared the hands-on experience I had of the Coolpad Dazen X7. Note that this smartphone was launched in India in May earlier this year. In this post, I am going to share the detailed review of this device by a Chinese OEM.

Coolpad Dazen X7

Coolpad Dazen X7 box contents

The box contains the handset, a travel adapter, a USB cable for charging and
data syncing, a SIM tray pin, a user guide, and a warranty card. There are no earphones in the box. Even their debut device, Coolpad Dazen 1 (review) did not pack earphones. (I do not understand why manufacturers opt not to go for a pair of earpiece. Is it a Chinese custom or anything? Remember that Xiaomi Mi 4 (review), Xiaomi Redmi Note (review) and Phicomm Passion 660 (review) were also deprived of earphones. Looks like they are following the footsteps of their competitors.)

Coolpad Dazen X7 build and design

Coolpad Dazen X7 rear

The front and rear body of this smartphone is entirely made up of Corning Gorilla Glass 3. Thus, making the device slippery. There is a nice dotted pattern beneath the rear glass, which reflects at certain angles. The body is supported by a metal frame on the side, with chamfered metal edges. The build quality is solid, and the device feels sturdy.

The device has on-screen navigation buttons, instead of the usual capacitive touch buttons.

The smartphone has a unibody design, i.e., the back panel is non-removable. This device allows two SIM cards - one micro and the other nano. The latter one is a hybrid slot, which can either be used as a SIM card slot, or as a means to expand the device storage via a micro SD card. There are two separate SIM trays for each slot. Each can be accessed via the pin available in the box.

The device can be said to have a glass-and-metal candy-bar design.

Coolpad Dazen X7 features

In terms of specifications, the device features a FHD display with a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels. It is powered by 1.7 GHz MediaTek MT6595 octa-core processor, 2 GB RAM, 16 GB internal storage, which is expandable up to 32 GB. It comes with a 5.2 inch screen. It runs on Android 4.4 with Coolpad's skin, the CoolUI, and packs 2,700 mAh battery. It also features a 13 MP primary camera, along with a 8 MP front-camera.

The smartphone possesses direction, gravity, acceleration, light, e-compass, proximity, gyro, linear acceleration and rotation vector sensors. It does not have temperature, pressure, ambient temperature and relative humidity sensors.

Coolpad Dazen X7 software

The device runs on Android KitKat, with its own custom skin as a topping. It is called the CoolUI. I personally liked the interface. One thing I strongly disliked is the way notifications are presented. All the notifications are grouped together inside a single notification entry, and hence, one needs to actually make an extra click in order to get to any actual notification. Example of a very bad user experience.

There is no app drawer, and all the apps are placed on the home screen itself. There are quite a few interesting pre-loaded apps on the device. These include Lock screen, CoolShow, Rock Wallpaper, and Cool Store, to name a few.

As the name specifies, Lock Screen locks the device's screen whenever the app icon is touched.

CoolShow is a one-stop app to manage device's theme, lock screen and home screen wallpaper, alarm tones, lock screen style, and more.

Rock Wallpaper changes the device's home screen wallpaper on a single touch. There is a collection of images, after which they start repeating. Also, if the device is shaked, the existing wallpaper gets some visual effects. I liked this feature a lot.

The smartphone also comes with a split screen option, i.e., two apps can be used at the same time by splitting the screen horizontally into two. For instance, one can easily watch a video on Youtube while chatting on Whatsapp.

Coolpad Dazen X7 performance and benchmarks

Gaming on this device is a joyful experience, many thanks to its 1.7 GHz octa-core processor backed by 2 GB RAM. Multi-tasking on this device is fun and smooth. No lag was observed while launching and switching between apps, clicking or editing photos, watching videos or browsing the internet. High-end games performed smoothly. But the device did heat up while playing games, clicking pictures and running benchmark tests. Overall, the device performed well as far as daily usage is concerned.

Coolpad Dazen X7 stability result

AnTuTu rating: 43625

General performance: Superior
Game performance: Higher (surpasses 80% other devices)
Battery performance: Average (surpasses 50% other devices)

Coolpad Dazen X7 supports 10 finger multi-touch

The device supports 10 finger multi-touch, i.e., the touchscreen can detect (and act at) ten touches at any instance in time.

Coolpad Dazen X7 display

The device features a full HD display with a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels. It comes with a 5.2-inch screen. The glass is non-reflective, hence no issues to use the device in direct sunlight. The display is sharp. Color reproduction is vibrant. The touch sensitivity is good. The picture quality is superb.

Coolpad Dazen X7 camera

The smartphone features a 13 MP rear camera, along with a 8 MP front-camera.

To begin with, the camera offers a lot of options. There is also a professional mode, where one can tweak ISO and shutter speed.

The camera delivers pretty clear details under bright sunlight. The noise level is low, and the colors are vivid. Low light photography is not recommended, as too much noise creeps in.

The video quality is average. The front camera is pretty decent for capturing selfies/groupfies.

Coolpad Dazen X7 battery life

The device packs 2,700 mAh battery, which performs just average. The battery backup is not worth the price of the device. I was forced to carry a charger to work when using this as my primary device.

Why you should buy it?

1. Good display

2. Supports 4G

3. Decent user interface

4. Attractive design

5. Good for multi-tasking

Why you shouldn't buy it?

1. Expensive

2. Slippery body

3. Have to choose between second SIM or expandable storage

4. Average battery backup.

Coolpad Dazen X7 verdict

The display is good,
The attractive design stood.
But given the poor battery and high price,
Think before buying, you should.
